Rayures Quickstart sets up a default layout that is automatically used by your Velocity templates. But you can also easily use different layouts for different parts of your application. According to the action bean and event name, Rayures looks for a {{{layout.vm}}} file at the end of these paths:

Rayures automatically uses the first {{{layout.vm}}} file that it finds, defaulting to {{{/view/layout.vm}}}.
Now you can use different layouts for different areas of your web application. Another powerful feature is the ability to combine your layouts. Read about it in [[Nested layouts]].
Rayures comes with an [[ActionResolver|http://stripes.sourceforge.net/docs/current/javadoc/net/sourceforge/stripes/controller/ActionResolver.html]] that adopts the convention of binding Action Bean classes to ~URLs without the {{{.action}}} suffix. This works because Quickstart configures the [[DynamicMappingFilter|http://stripes.sourceforge.net/docs/current/javadoc/net/sourceforge/stripes/controller/DynamicMappingFilter.html]] in the {{{web.xml}}} file. Furthermore, the Action Resolver converts Action Bean class names to lowercase_with_underscores, such that {{{MyAccountActionBean}}} is bound to {{{/my_account}}}.
This is the default; you can of course customize an Action Bean's URL binding with [[@UrlBinding|http://stripes.sourceforge.net/docs/current/javadoc/net/sourceforge/stripes/action/UrlBinding.html]]. In fact, you will need to do so if you want to use parameters in clean ~URLs, such as {{{/my_account/5}}}, because Rayures cannot guess how you want to bind such parameters.
Read on to the Rayures Action Resolver's [[Event handler conventions]].
Rayures Quickstart sets up a project with [[VelocityLayoutServlet|http://velocity.apache.org/tools/releases/1.4/view/layoutservlet.html]] and configures it with the following conventions, //on the classpath//:
* The default layout is {{{/view/layout.vm}}}
* Velocity macros are automatically loaded from {{{/view/macros.vm}}}
* The default error page is {{{/view/error.vm}}}
Now, because the default layout is automatically used, you do not need to specify it in your Velocity templates. The layout that Quickstart sets up is as follows:

As you can see, it's very easy to set the title, and there is no need for boilerplate code to specify the layout.
Of course, you can use different layouts for different action beans and events. You can read about it in [[Custom layouts]], or come back to that later and instead move on to [[Tags]].
[[Overview]]
By default, Stripes recognizes methods in action beans as being event handlers if they have the following criteria:
* are {{{public}}}
* return a {{{Resolution}}}
* have no parameters.
With Rayures, methods that respect the above criteria, except that they return {{{void}}}, can also be event handlers. For example:

These methods ''must not be static'' and ''must be declared in a class that implements the {{{ActionBean}}} interface''. This avoids undesirable behavior such as calling {{{public void}}} methods on the {{{Object}}} class.
For this to work, the action bean must implement the {{{RayuresActionBean}}} interface. Then, the default {{{Resolution}}} is a {{{ForwardResolution}}} to the path returned by {{{getDefaultPath()}}}.
Specifically, action beans that extend {{{RayuresBaseActionBean}}} inherit a default path strategy that combines the name of the action bean class and the name of the event handler to construct the path. For example, an action bean named:

With Rayures, Velocity is set up to look for templates on the class path. That way, you can keep Action Beans and View Templates closely together. In the Quickstart-generated project, you have:

You don't have to switch back and forth between two directory structures. Both files are there neatly next to each other. As we'll see later, this goes for resource bundles as well.

Just as in ~JSPs, we can refer to the current action bean with the name {{{actionBean}}}. In Velocity, {{{$actionBean}}} is enough, although you can also use the ${actionBean} syntax as well.
There is a [[Formatter object]] in there as well, which is automatically available under {{{$fmt}}}.
Finally, you probably noticed we've set the title to {{{"Welcome to Stripes"}}}. So where is the layout? Aha - continue on to the [[Default layout]].
For convenience, Rayures automatically adds an instance of the [[Formatter|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/view/util/Formatter.html]] object to the Velocity context, which you can use in your templates with {{{$fmt}}}. In the Quickstart home page, we had {{{$fmt.today()}}} to display today's date. Rayures includes a convenient custom [[LocalePicker|http://stripes.sourceforge.net/docs/current/javadoc/net/sourceforge/stripes/localization/LocalePicker.html]] that looks in the request for a {{{lang}}} parameter to choose the language. Once the language has been set, it is stored in the session and reused for subsequent requests. It can be changed again with a different {{{lang}}} parameter in the request.

Having different layouts is nice, but it's even nicer to be able to combine them and avoid having to repeat code that layouts have in common.
In the web mail sample application of the [[Stripes Book|http://www.pragprog.com/titles/fdstr]], I have an example where we have a base layout, and another layout that builds on the base to add the list of folders on the left. The base layout looks something like this:

Now, for the layout that has the list of folders on the left, we don't want to copy this layout; we just want to //nest// the list of folders within the {{{$screen_content}}}. How do we do that?
With Velocity, you can import a template with the {{{#parse}}} directive. So the idea is to create a new layout and place it somewhere where Rayures will find it (see [[Custom layouts]] for the search strategy). The new layout will be used //instead// of the default layout, but we can still reuse the default layout by importing it. Before doing so, we'll add the list of folders to the {{{$screen_content}}}. Here's how it's done:

By default, Stripes uses {{{StripesResources.properties}}} as a resource bundle. While there are key lookup strategies that help in keeping things organized, another nice way to modularize is to use one resource bundle per action bean.
Building on that notion, Rayures includes a resource bundle resolver that looks for keys in the following resource bundles, given a request to an action bean and an event name:
* action bean class name + "_" + event name
* action bean class name
* {{{StripesResources}}} in the action bean package, and all packages of the hierarchy
* class name of each parent class
* {{{StripesResources}}} in the parent class package, and all packages of the hierarchy
* recursively for each parent class, without adding duplicates and without including {{{java.lang.Object}}}.

If Rayures uses Velocity as a templating engine, how to you add Stripes tags to your templates? Rayures wraps Stripes tags into Java objects that you can create in Java code and add to your Velocity templates. This greatly simplifies templates and gives you the power of Java for encapsulating view logic. You can still have some logic in your view templates, but the creation of tags in Java code and Velocity's simple syntax help keep your templating logic minimal and easy to digest.
Let's start with a simple example. Say you'd like to add a link to {{{AnotherActionBean}}}'s {{{view}}} event. In a JSP, it might look something like this:

Finally, some tags have additional convenience methods, such as the {{{label()}}} method used above, and Rayures also provides conveniences for resource bundles, which we'll see later on.
Now, to add this link to your view template, you just drop it in:

This calls {{{getLink()}}} on your Action Bean, which returns the {{{SLink}}} object that you created, which in turn just renders itself with its {{{toString()}}} method. Voilà!

The {{{tag(Class)}}} method is defined on the {{{RayuresBaseActionBean}}} class, so have your Action Beans extend this class for convenience.

The Test module of Rayures provides some conveniences when writing tests with the [[TestNG|http://testng.org]] framework.
Instead of setting up a [[MockServletContext|http://stripes.sourceforge.net/docs/current/javadoc/net/sourceforge/stripes/mock/MockServletContext.html]] programatically, you can use a {{{web.xml}}} file. I find this easier, because you can just copy the {{{web.xml}}} from your web application and make adjustments as necessary. Furthermore, you can use different {{{web.xml}}} files for different test scenarios; the file does not actually have to be named {{{web.xml}}}.
To use the Test module, write a class that is annotated with ~TestNG's {{{@Test}}}, and that extends [[TestWithMockContainer|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/test/TestWithMockContainer.html]]. Then, override the {{{public String getWebXmlPath()}}} method and return the path to your {{{web.xml}}} file, as found on the class path. Finally, use one of the {{{doRequestOn()}}} methods from the [[TestWithMockContainer|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/test/TestWithMockContainer.html]] class to execute a request and obtain the Action Bean. One of my primary goals in Rayures is to provide an alternative to ~JSPs to build view templates. I don't //hate// ~JSPs, but the ways that they allow for writing reusable code just do not feel natural to me. Instead of writing custom tags - as easy as they are to write since JSP 2.0 - I'd rather write a //panel//: a block of Java code with an associated template that you can just instantiate and drop into your template and //voilà// - it just renders itself.
[[Apache Click|http://incubator.apache.org/click]] and [[Apache Wicket|http://wicket.apache.org]] use this type of strategy. Now, these frameworks are //component based//, which means that they use an altogether different paradigm than //action based// frameworks such as Stripes, but I really like the way they isolate blocks of template code, and I think such a strategy can be put to good use with Stripes while still using it as an action based framework, as it is meant to be used.
So, enough philosophical discourse. What does this mean in terms of code? Well, let's look at an example. Say we have a typical action bean/JSP combination for a simple login form. Our action bean might look like this:

A view object is simply an object that represents a chunk of view template code, typically HTML code. View objects are rendered in templates via their {{{toString()}}} method. This keeps things very simple: to display a view object in a template, you just need to refer to it and it will render itself.
View objects can have children (other view objects, or even plain objects). When a view object is rendered, its children are rendered recursively. This hierarchy of objects matches the structure of an HTML document, which is a hierarchy of tags and content.
Everything is fairly abstract at this point, which is normal because {{{ViewObject}}} is an abstract class at the top of the class hierarchy. Let's move on to [[View Templates]], where things will start to get a little more concrete.

A view template is a view object that has an associated template. Theoretically, this could be any type of template. In Rayures, [[TemplateEngine|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/service/TemplateEngine.html]] is an interface that defines how a template is rendered. The default implementation uses [[Velocity|http://velocity.apache.org]].
An instance of [[ViewTemplate|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/view/ViewTemplate.html]] (which is a subclass of [[ViewObject|http://www.stripesbook.com/rayures/javadoc/org/stripesbook/rayures/view/ViewObject.html]]) has a //data model//: basically a map. In the template, you refer to the data by a key in the map to obtain the corresponding value, and use the data to render dynamic HTML code, using the Velocity syntax. Velocity has a very simple set of directives, intuitive syntax, and excellent documentation, so rest assured that learning it is an easy task.
Let's look at an example. First, you have a class that extends {{{ViewTemplate}}}:
